Meeting in Honour Of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth at the British Embassy

On 19 September, the Chaplain-President, alongside Bishop Robert and Canon John Wilkinson, attended an event organised by the British Embassy in Brussels at which the funeral of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth was screened. This event commemorated the dedicated service that Queen Elizabeth had always demonstrated towards her peoples until the very last days of her life. The Central Committee is very grateful for the warm relations we have with the British Ambassador and Embassy.

Death of HM Queen Elizabeth II, 8 September 2022

The Anglican Central Committee, in concert with all the Anglican parishes and people in Belgium, expresses its complete admiration for the life, work and service of Queen Elizabeth during her reign of 70 years.

Queen Elizabeth was universally known for her sincere Christian faith, her tireless service to nation and Commonwealth, her absolute charm and dedication, her refusal to take a well-deserved retirement. To say that she will be missed does not do justice to the kindly influence she has had throughout her reign on world events and leaders.

Queen Elizabeth was the third-cousin-once-removed of King Philippe, and this, together with the fact that Queen Elizabeth, as Supeme Governor of the Church of England, had a constitutional role in those parishes in Belgium which are attached to the Church of England, has always made Belgian Anglicans her special admirers. In the confidence of the Gospel, we lift her soul to God's merciful love.

Bishop Robert offers condolences as the Queen's death is announced

Queen Elizabeth was a deeply loved and cherished monarch, in the United Kingdom and across the Commonwealth – and was held with considerable affection and respect around the world. Within our own Diocese we think especially of Malta, which she loved and where she and Prince Philip lived for a time before she acceded to the throne.

Her Majesty saw enormous changes in the world during her reign and yet she remained a constant figure for us all – a symbol of faith, duty and public service. That was something she pledged herself to as a young woman and it was something from which she never deviated.

As our Elizabethan era ends with sadness, so a new era begins with hope and expectation. We offer our prayers for our new monarch, His Majesty King Charles, and the Queen Consort, Camilla. May they know God’s wisdom and blessing – for the days and weeks ahead and in the years to come.

God save the King.

Conference in Munich on Anglican education in Europe

The Chaplain-President was honoured to be invited to a conference organised by Bishop Mark on Anglican education in Europe held on 10-13 August at the Schloss Fürstenreid in Munich. An impressive array of world Anglican theologians was present, including amongst others Mgr Ian Ernest (formerly archbishop of the Indian Ocean and now director of the Anglican Centre in Rome (The Anglican Centre in Rome ), Mgr James Tengatenga (formerly bishop of Southern Malawi and now professor of Global Anglicanism at Sewanee (James Tengatenga | School of Theology | University of the South (sewanee.edu) ), Profs Ian Markham, Melody Knowles and Katherine Grieb from Virginia Theological Seminary (Faculty | Virginia Theological Seminary (vts.edu) ), Prof Charlotte Methuen of the University of Glasgow (University of Glasgow - Schools - School of Critical Studies - Our staff - Dr Charlotte Methuen ) and Canon Mpho Tutu (daugher of the late Archbishop Desmond Tutu: Home - Mpho Tutu Van Furth ). Ideas were exchanged about how best to present Anglicanism to a European audience thirsty for acquaintance with our tradition.

The CEC met on June 29 around theologians and members of the Ukrainian clergy in order to hear the political and spiritual difficulties encountered by the people attacked since February 2022 by Russia, but also to hear proposals on the theological reading of this political news. The question of the role of religion in public and political debate was at the center of the discussions.

St Martha and St Mary Leuven

On 3 July, the Chaplain-President visited St Martha and St Mary Leuven to participate in the first celebration of Holy Communion by the curate, the Revd Sarah-Jane King, who had been ordained priest the day before in St John's Gent by Bishop Robert. This was a very joyful occasion, followed by brunch in a local café. The preacher was the Revd Simon Tyndall, formerly chaplain of St Paul's Tervuren (and a descendant of William Tyndale). Both of the priests in the parish are women and the parish has a special ministry towards the students of KU Leuven and ETF Leuven.

Three of the candidates work in Benelux: the Revd Jonathan Halliwell (whose training was based at Holy Trinity Brussels and who is a former student of the Chaplain-President at KU Leuven) will serve at St John & St Philip Den Haag; the Revd Mark Hafkenscheid will serve at St Mary's Rotterdam; the Revd Sarah Jane King will continue to serve at St Martha & St Mary Leuven. The Revd Glen Ruffle will return to serve at St Andrew's Moscow as soon as the political situation there allows.

Goodbye and thank you, Jo Jan!

Jo Jan has stewarded the passage since 2019 from a volunteer part-time Central Committee to our current full-time professional Central Committee, with three permanent full-time posts of Chaplain-President, Secretary-General and Second Secretary. All parts of the Central Committee's work have been improved and placed on a more secure and professional footing by Jo Jan's constant hard work, for which the Chaplain-President, Vice-President, Member and Second Secretary are unreservedly grateful. An informal breakfast was held in HTB on 30 June, with laughter and good cheer the order of the day. We wish Jo Jan all good things as he moves on from the Central Committee to commit to his PhD studies full-time.
